NCS teams and individual athletes to compete in provincials

Athletes in high school and middle school represent NCS at provincial championships in volleyball and swimming.

Nanaimo Christian School athletes celebrated impressive achievements last weekend! Gavin Deibert swam in four events at the BC School Sports aquatics provincial championships. Both the senior girls' and boys' volleyball teams qualified for provincials. And the Grade 8 girls' and boys' volleyball teams played in their district tournaments with the NCS girls finishing in 3rd place.

At the provincial aquatics meet at the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre Gavin Deibert (Grade 10) swam in four preliminary heats where he competed against students from Grades 9-12. He qualified for two finals events and won his B final in the 50m backstroke, placing 9th overall. He finished second in the B final 50m butterfly, placing 10th overall -- a great accomplishment against a strong field of much older boys. Well done, Gavin!

On the volleyball court NCS senior girls have qualified for the Single A Girls' Volleyball provincials in Castlegar by winning the Island Championship tournament last week! They played qualifying games against Duncan Christian, St. John's Academy, and Port Hardy. After winning games on Wednesday, the team clinched a spot for provincials on Thursday morning by defeating Lake Cowichan and advancing to the finals. In the final match, NCS defeated Duncan Christian 25-7, 25-22, 25-17. Throughout the tournament the team demonstrated an incredible spirit of perseverance and fun. It was great to see the team rally together in play but also support and celebrate with each other. This is true teamwork! Congratulations to Renee Vanderkooi as tournament MVP and Elizabeth Rocha and Nicole Hobbs as all-stars! Provincials take place in Castlegar Nov. 30 - Dec. 2.

Senior boys' volleyball played a very strong Island Championship tournament. They lost only one set leading up to the finals. They won the semi-finals in a 3-0 sweep of Lake Cowichan and then met Duncan Christian in the finals. NCS lost 3-1 but still earned silver medals and qualified to go to Provincials in North Vancouver Nov. 30 - Dec 2. Congrats to Vince vanBaaren and Bradley Ney who were named 1st team all-stars and Reid Elston who was named 2nd team all star.

A huge thank you to all of the coaches and parent volunteers who make it possible!

Please pray for great teamwork at provincial championships both on and off the court, safety in travelling, and a fun competition for all.
